The Longer The Journey, The Longer The Beard

I was watching the NBC special Live edition of Peter Pan with Sam and the kids last night and took appreciative notice of the length of the beards and hair on most of the pirates. My mind trailed off realizing that long hair and beards were standard because Pirates would be away at sea for months, neglecting a good beard trim in favor of constant adventure, looting, and villainy.

As we sail through life, the parts of life that seem the most strenuous and testing are actually the most adventurous. Those are the parts that grow our beard... or our endurance, or heroism, or confidence, or wisdom. Without those adventures we're nothing more than baldfaced babies.

Settlers of Catan fans will agree, there are few greater accomplishments than owning the Longest Road card. But building the longest road and keeping it longer than your competitors is hard, it costs a lot of your wood and brick. But in the end, it's worth it. Those two victory points are usually the two that deliver the win.

The road is long and winding, but the sharp turns make us better. Better husbands, better dads, better leaders.

Cheers to the bearded and the road-weary adventurer in all of us.

The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is his name. Exodus 15:3
